Update: 4th November 2011

The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists

We have just finished auditions for a production of 'The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists' (Howard Brenton, after Robert Tressell) to be performed at the end of January 2012. This performance has been commissioned to commemorate the anniversary of Wortley Hall as a place for working people to enjoy leisure activities.

http://www.wortleyhall.org.uk/

There will be 5 performances:

20th& 21st January, 7.30pm, Wortley Hall

28th Jan, 7.30pm, The Hub at Kirkburton

3rd and 4th February, 7.30pm The Venue in Stocksbridge

The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists was written in the early 1900s and follows a group of builders, painters and decorators as they struggle to make ends meet. They live in a world where poverty is always just around the corner, with no welfare state, no NHS and very few employment rights. We see the ups and downs of ordinary working people in a time when unemployment was high and wages were low. Doom and gloom, sometimes… but humor and humanity, often.

Directed by Danielle Trigg with design by Sarah Lewis, professionals in their field, we feel this play is a fitting end to the Wortley Hall Remembered programme that has been running throughout the year. ‘The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists’ was first performed here in 1954 so we are honoured to bring it back to Wortley Hall as a fitting end to the season!

More details to follow soon. Watch this space….!

Update: 28th November 2010

Last night (Saturday) was the final night of the first run of Here Be Dragons.  We performed our musical history of Stocksbridge to four wonderfully apprec
iative audiences - including to the Lord Mayor of Sheffield and Stocksbridge's Town Mayor on Friday evening.  The cast and extensive supporting crew all did an excellent job and all the performances were very warmly received.  Click here for some photo's taken by Tim Fearon at the dress rehearsal on Wednesday 24th November.

Prior to the first night, the Sheffield Star printed an artlicle about the play and our trip to the Town Hall to deliver the Lord Mayor's tickets in person.  You can read a copy of the article here.

We will be bringing what has been an extremely busy and successful year to a close with Carols on the Green (in the quadrangle outside Tata (formerly Corus) Steelworks in the centre of Stocksbridge at 2.00pm next Sunday, 5th December.  There will be carol singing - including the first public performances of the winning carols from our local carol competition - plus a Nativity, Deepcar Brass Band and the unveiling of our willow sculptures.  There may even be a surprise special guest - ho, ho, ho!

Update: 30th October 2010

Click here for SVBA's latest articles in Look Local with the results of the Local Carol Competiton (on page 3) and a report on our half-term Willow Workshop event (on page 6).  Come back soon to find out what happened when the SVBA Dragon went down to Sheffield Town Hall to meet the Lord Mayor or check out our Facebook group if you'd like a sneak preview.

Oh, and while we're at it, does anyone fancy coming up with a name for our Dragon?  There's no prizes (at least not until I've spoken to the Committee), but if you've got any suggestions, just drop us a line via the Guestbook.

Look forward to hearing from you soon!

Are you interested in recording life in Stocksbridge, Deepcar and District for posterity?  As we all know the face of Stocksbridge and District is rapidly changing.  Some important buildings and notable characters have already disappeared from our lives. Steel Valley Beacon Arts would like you to have an opportunity to record our area as it is now, so, as part of their Community History Through the Arts  Project  we are organising a photographic event to take place on Friday 8th
October.   Please note this is a change of date from that already advertised in Look Local. .You are invited to take photographs of our area any time during the day or night.on this day and send  them in to become part of a display in the Atrium of the Venue, Stocksbridge running  from November 22nd to 3rd December during the time when SVBA's “Here be Dragons: Stocksbridge, the Musical"  will be presented.

You are invited to submit a maximum of 3 photographs which should be:
• A minimum of 7 inches by 5 inches in size – landscape or portrait
• In colour or black and white
• Printed on a computer or on one of the commercial machines readily
available in branches of Boots Stores or Clarke’s Chemists in Penistone
• Have on the back of the picture a title, the time of day it was taken, where and/or of whom
• Accompanied by a completed entry form available from Stocksbridge Library, The Venue. Geo’s, The Lunch Box, Look Local Office and The Bridge Community Shop
• Sent to Ian Enters 27 Hunshelf Park Stocksbridge Sheffield S36 2BT by 22nd October.

This is not a photographic competition  - we are looking for the interest of the subject matter and in  recording  a “Day in the Life of Here”. Don’t forget to take your camera with you whether you are at work or play on that day!

There is no charge to enter your pictures but we regret we are unable to return them.
